Reinstatement

Academic dismissal is a way to protect your ability to finish your IU degree in a timely and cost-efficient manner. It is designed to allow you time to address the barriers to your academic success. If you believe you are ready to come back to IU Bloomington, you may be able to petition for reinstatement.

If you have been dismissed from the College of Arts and Sciences, you will work with the Office of Undergraduate Retention and Student Success (OURSS) to be reinstated.

If you have been dismissed from a different school at IUB or Advising and Major Exploration Services (previously University Division) and you now want to pursue a major in the College, you must first complete the Petition to Enter the College While in Dismissal Status. Your petition will be reviewed, and you will receive information about your next steps.

*If you have not been enrolled as a student on any IU campus for at least 36 months, you may be eligible for the Fresh Start policy, which resets your IU GPA and eliminates your credit deficit. Contact us to schedule a meeting to your options.

 Late or incomplete petitions will not be reviewed.

Mandatory meeting

To receive access to the reinstatement petition, you must meet with a student success team member to discuss the petition and the process. In this meeting, the student success team member will provide you with and options for how you can complete coursework either at IU or another institution while you are in dismissal status.

Petition

The reinstatement petition is a web form.
The petition includes has several sections you must complete:

• Current or previous non-IU academic work
• Reflection on the barriers to academic success during your IU career, how you have addressed those barriers to allow for academic success, and whether you plan to change your intended major or degree
• Planning the enrollment for your return semester with your academic advisor

You will also be able to submit additional information and documents, such as unofficial transcripts from other institutions and letters of recommendation or readiness.

Petition reviews begin after the deadline and may take 3-4 weeks to be completed. You will be notified by email with a decision on your petition or request for additional information.
